Affiliation:

I am a research member of the Knowledge Engineering and Machine Learning Group (KEMLG), of the Computer Science Department (CS), that belongs to the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (UPC).

Education:

B.Sc. in Computer Science from the Facultat d'Informàtica de Barcelona in 1989. M.Sc. in Computer Science from the Facultat d'Informàtica de Barcelona in 1991. Ph.D. in Computer Science (in the Ph.D. Program on Artificial Intelligence) from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 1996.

Academic status:

I have been an Assistant professor of the Software Department between 1990 and 1992. I have been an Associate Professor for Technical Studies (i.e., Professor Titular d'Escola Universitària-TEU) of the Software Department, between 1992 and 1996. Since 1997 I am an Associate Professor (i.e., Professor Titular d'Universitat-TU) of the Software Department. I have been teaching both in the Faculty of Computer Science at Barcelona (FIB) and in the Faculty of Mathematics and Statistics (FME).

Research interests:

I have been working on several areas of Artificial Intelligence, mainly in Case-Based Reasoning , Knowledge Engineering, Knowledge Acquisition and Concept Formation in Knowledge-Based Systems, as well as on Machine Learning, Intelligent Data Analysis/Data Mining, Distributed and Integrated AI Architectures and Real-Time AI Systems .

I have an special interest in the application of Artificial Intelligence to Environmental Sciences . We have been working on Intelligent Environmental Decision Support Systems.

Scientific Associations:

ACIA (Catalan Association of Artificial Intelligence)

I am a pioneer member (foundation in 1994) and I was member of the ACIA board of Directors during the period 1994-1998.

AEPIA (Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence)

I am member since 1992

IEMSS (International Environmental Modelling & Software Society)

I am a pioneer member (foundation in 2000) and I am member of the IEMSS board since 2000.

ISAI (International Society of Applied Intelligence).

I am member since 1999

Research Working Groups:

I am a pioneer member of BESAI (Binding Environmental Sciences and Artificial Intelligence). BESAI is an European (but not limited to) working group formed of both Artificial Intelligence and Environmental Science researchers. BESAI has organised 4 workshops and 1 special session at International Conferences:

·         1st ECAI'98 Workshop on Binding Environmental Sciences and Artificial Intelligence (BESAI'98). Brighton, U.K. August 1998.
